Harry Bertoia
untitled (Multi-Plane Construction)
USA, c. 1958
welded steel with applied enamel
38 w x 12 d x 8.75 h inches
This early sculpture is reminiscent of colors schemes that Bertoia explored
in his monotypes during the Cranbrook years. To create these colorful and tactile
surfaces, Bertoia atomized the surface with acids after the enameling process
giving the planes a particularly granular quality.
