Porsche 356 Speedster
Germany, 1958
150 w x 66 d x 50 h inches
First introduced in 1954 at the request of Max Hoffman, Porsche’s US
Distributor, the Speedster was a special convertible addition to Porsche’s
already successful 356 range. The intent behind the design was to provide,
primarily for America’s milder climates, a more sporting, pared-down
version of the existing 356 Roadster that could be equally at home on
the track as on the roads snaking through California’s hills and canyons.
Although based on the standard 356A platform, the Speedster had a lower,
more rakish appearance, largely attributable to its shortened windscreen
and racing bucket seats with prominent side bolsters. In deference to
its sporting heritage and intent, the car was fairly spartan, specified
without true side windows, an ashtray or the usual interior map pockets.
In all, Porsche produced just 4144 Speedsters between 1954 and 1959.
This 1958 car, #84822, is finished in Ivory with red leather seats,
dashboard and door panels, and beige loop carpets. The car is fitted
with its original grey plastic steering wheel. The engine, which has
been recently rebuilt and specially tuned by a well-known marque specialist,
puts out 90 horsepower thanks to its higher-performance Porsche 912
heads. The interior upholstery and convertible top have been recently
restored, and the car has been regularly and well-maintained. Overall,
this car presents itself in excellent condition, with pleasing, well-detailed
cosmetics and sound mechanicals, ready for immediate enjoyment.
This lot is accompanied by its original Driver’s Manual and pouch.
$120,000-150,000
